Im doing a road trip with the old lady next week and pulled off my lowered progressive shocks to put on my stock air assist shocks, and they are TOAST. You push down on the back of the bike and quickly release, and it bounces back up like a beach ball. I went for a quick rip, and its like a pogo stick bouncing back up, and hitting the full extent of the shock. is there a way to top up the fluid in these things, or did they go bad just sitting on the shelf for the past few years?

They can definitely go bad. Did they leak any oil onto the shelf? As you probably know, the way the dampening/rebound part of shocks work is to force oil through little holes. If that oil is gone, or in the wrong part of the shock, you get what you're experiencing. I have seen instances where if the shocks are on the bike overnight, and the oil is still in there, it can seep back to where it belongs, and they're magically "fixed". It's rare, but it does occur. Go check 'em again after a few hours. You might have to just go buy a new set, though....

I did a google search and came up with this. Gonna give it a try.

Quite often when the air shocks are removed from the bike and stored lying on their side without the air line plugged, the oil leaks out and the shocks become useless.

After some searching, I found that in the rear air shocks it's 5 wt oil in them and each one holds 328 cc or 11.09 ounces.

To get it in there takes a bit of work but Make sure that there is no oil left in there first.

I had a helper and we compressed the shocks in an inverted position to make sure they were empty a few times.

After this, I used a syringe and picked up the pre measured oil and found that it will only accept the oil after the shock is first compressed completely and then inject the oil as the shock is extended. Naturally, you must inject the oil with the shock in the upright position to be effective.

We did this more as an experiment but it worked out very well and to date, they have been in service working well for quite a while now.

Well my shocks must have been inadvertantly invertedly stored, because they were bone dry of any oil!!! :? I went to wallmart (I know,I know) and bought a 60 cc saringe, and a liter of sae 10 wieght oil, and injected 320 cc of oil in ech one with no trouble at all, and reintalled. They work like a charm. Just went for a quick rip in between monsoons, and it has that old cushy ride back again... Was supposed to hit the road today and meet Bandit in AZ for the Smokeout, but we are getting hammerd by a freek storm right now, so standing by...
