This is for Billy Lane, Everyone has an opinion on this situation. I wish the best on the outcome. I know it only takes one mistake to ruin years of hard work. For the ones who don't, believe it! I wish the best because I think a lot more good would come of this tragedy with public anouncments on the effects of alcohol and driving. I don't want to forget the family of the guy who died, I just think more good would come from Billy doing a lot fo public service and maybe even building and bike and donating it to some charity? Just my opinion. Later!

No doubt that this is a tragedy for both parties. A family looses a loved one, and the other has to live the rest of his life with the consequences and memories of the horrifying events. But that's life, good or bad we must stand firm and go on. My hopes are that Billy can find some kind of peace in whatever the outcome...

He will do a couple years get paroled and have another life story to channel into his work and write another book. Look at it this way Billy will be a very good license plate fabricator while he is the big house. As far as the guy he killed I didn't know him or his family so I have no opinion in that matter.

It was a tragedy all around. This is no excuse for Billy, but the guy he hit was drunk, too. It was just one of those weird coincidences that will send shockwaves through both families for a very long time. And this is just the beginning. If this turns out to be a typlical case, once the criminal charges against Billy are settled, then the civil lawsuits begin. His little girlfriend has already started after him. The victim's family will too. Billy's struggles won't be over once he gets sentenced and serves his time. Civil cases can go on and on and on. Look at OJ (I'm not drawing any parallel between the two cats other than the legal troubles...OJ is an arrogant scumbag of the worst kind). OJ got through the criminal stuff without a scratch in his original trial, but the families went after him, and now he can't spend a dime without the families taking 6 cents.
I've talked to Billy on a couple of occasions. He's a cool, funny guy. It truly is a tragedy that in a couple of minutes of poor judgement, fogged by alcohol, he's ruined his life and the lives of some people around him. I wish him strength and hope he comes through this. He strikes me as a stand up guy. I hope he'll do something, public service wise, to make ammends.....

Celebrity Motorcycle builder William David "Billy" Lane faced a judge today at 11:15 am and heard that he will spend the next 6 years in a jail cell and three more after that on probation. Lane was immediately handcuffed and led away by deputies to begin his sentence. As he was being escorted out, friends and family members shouted encouragement to him. Lane did not show any emotion. Lane, 39, faced up to nine years in prison after a judge in June OK’d a plea deal in which prosecutors agreed to drop a charge of DUI manslaughter in connection with a Sept. 4, 2006, crash that left Sebastian Inlet park ranger Gerald Morelock dead. Police said Lane’s blood-alcohol level was more than twice the legal limit when he crossed a double-yellow line to speed at 68 mph past three cars on State Road A1A south of Melbourne Beach. He crashed his Dodge pickup head on into 56-year-old Morelock’s small Yamaha motorcycle. In his sentencing, the judge said he recognized this was an "isolated" incident and that restitution has been made to the victim's family, adding that Lane's record shows no previous DUI's. Under Florida law, Lane's North Carolina DUI arrest in 2003 was not admissible and the judge was under no obligation to consider that incident since the charges were dismissed by a Judge. In that incident, Lane was at the Smoke Out in Salisbury, NC and eyewitnesses said he attempted a stunt on a bike and crashed into a car, then left the scene. North Carolina State Patrol arrested Lane across the and refused a breathalyzer test. His license was immediately suspended and was still suspended when the fatal wreck with Gerald Morelock occurred. The judge dismissed that DUI saying the State Patrol had not proven their case, as Lane’s attorney produced several witnesses who testified on his behalf that he had only one beer and was not impaired. It is obvious that the dismissal of the North Carolina DUI charge allowed the judge to be more lenient than he could otherwise have been. Had the prior DUI been considered, there is no doubt that Lane would have been facing upwards of 20 years or more jail time.

Maybe somebody here can answer this? Is giving your license up for life normal for this kind of DUI case? I wonder if BL offered this thinking the judge might be more lenient. I have never done any time other than a overnight x 3, but to me, never being able to ride ever again would be worse than the time.

They say that justice is blind, of course we all know that sometimes it can see very clearly, especially when is who you know and who you,,, well you know what I mean. I guess in Billy's case it was definitely blind. Stealth is right I believe that a cat like Billy Lane could had done a lot of good for the cause, out of jail. However, that's the way it is, I hope that Billy can adopt to his new home and still be able to do something positive. Perhaps his time could be reduced that way...

An NFL star runs down a pedstrian while driving drunk, pays the family some BIG money and get 30 days??? Billy kills a guy while driving drunk, pays the family money and gets 6 years?? Say what you want there has always been 2 justice systems in this country, one for the rich and famous and one for the everyday people. And oh yeah we are suppose to forgive Michael Vick now, he really is a good guy! yeah right, his ass should be sitting where he was in the BIG HOUSE and how many of you believe he really worked a constrution job for $10/hr., what a joke! Later!

I've been sober for 16 years, so far. I hope that everyone involved will find some sort of healing from this tragedy...

This a sad story. for both the family of the victim and Billy. Billy is one of us, if you ever met him you would know what I mean. He made a horrible mistake and now is paying the price even though others have done the same and pay a much smaller price. I pray for Billy and the vistims family. as far as the girl who is sueing Billy, hey think about it what can you get, he has lost everything, no one made you take that ride, DID THEY? To me, we have all lost a little something from this tragedy. From the few times I had ever talked toBilly, he was down to earth, never thought of him self as a STAR, just a guy who loved bikes like most of us. Not only has he gotr 6 years to do, but no license to ride again, so he will pay the rest of his life, unlike the NFL stars. You know I love NFL football but I am thinking about boycotting the season. Good luck Billy my thoughts and prayers ar with you! later!

I just hope that his notoriety isn't what got him this sentence. If it's a new precedent by which ALL drivers that kill a rider is measured, so be it, but I hope it's not the irony of who he is. I'm not going to condemn the man, as I'd be willing to bet there isn't one person on this board who hasn't rolled the dice. I, personally, think that the 6 years is easy compared to NEVER having a licence again. Let's hope that ALL drivers who kill someone are measured with the same ruler.
